I am a passionate human resources professional living in Vancouver, BC and looking for opportunities to gain more experience in the field. Ideally, I am seeking an HR generalist position or HR consulting opportunities. I have experience working with auditing HR policy, particularly in regards to BC Legislation and performance management.

I grew up in Greater Vancouver and I love this place! There is simply life bouncing off of every gray puddle and wafting cherry blossom. I have an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia (with a major in philosophy and a minor in history) as well as a human resource management diploma from British Columbia’s Institute of Technology (where I was the valedictorian in 2009).
I am an active member of the Human Resources Management Association in BC, and a CHRP Candidate. I volunteer as an HRMA Blogger, a PR/Communications Advisory Board member, and the moderator for the Emerging HR Practitioners Online Community group. I am also a contributor to the blog, Fireside HR.
After taking the advice of BCIT teachers and authors who pen modern career guides like What Color is Your Parachute, I began networking in 2007. Now that I am out of school and seeking employment, I attend every networking event I possibly can, and am constantly seeking new groups with which to network. I do not limit the time I spend networking to one professional group.
Because I commit so much time to networking, I feel like this is the time that I can share the most knowledge about this social approach. I hope that the things that I’ve learned from experience and research encourage you to get out there and network!
And for those of you who are new to networking, are considering attending an event, or are uncomfortable with the concept, remember this from Darcy Rezac, writer of Work the Pond: networking is not about what others can do for you; it’s about what you can do for them. Networking is about creating relationships, so it should not feel in-genuine.
I am more than happy to read your comments related to what I’ve written, or regarding any of your personal concerns related to networking.
I’m always up for chatting over coffee, so don’t be afraid to look for me on LinkedIn, follow me on Twitter @Networking604 or email me at geraldinesangalang@gmail.com.
All the very best to you!
Geraldine,
I couldn’t agree with you more about the importance of student networking. Great blog posts. I look forward to following your posts.
Have a great week!
Brent
Thanks, Brent.
So kind of you to say so – especially as a student.
Cheers!
Geraldine.
Hey Geraldine
Hope to see you at the wine and cheese prior to the F5 event! Great blog – I really enjoy reading it!!!
Thanks so much, Kellie! I really do want to volunteer at F5, but unfortunately I have to go out of town that week. I really wish I could go – I was really excited to hear Malcolm Gladwell speak.
Hi, Geraldine
Good website! I can see that you have lots of talent and skills from your website. Good luck with your job search. Perhaps we can go to the networking events together sometimes too.
So kind of you to say, Ying! That sounds great. We’ll definitely have to meet up sometime.
